Queensbury Tunnel is one of the longest and deepest railway tunnels in England!

It was on the G.N.R line serving the Northern industrial towns of Bradford, Halifax & Keighley.

Queensbury Tunnel is 2501yds long and was built by the Great Northern Railway between 1874-1878. It is now derelict and presents a liability to its owner, the Highways Agency. Over the next few years they intend to carry out significant remedial works, which might result in the tunnel being blocked by plugs of concrete.

Passenger services ceased in 1955.

The line used to be known as the Alpine route due to its hilly nature!

Many, including actor and explorer Brian Blessed, would like to see access through the tunnel maintained so that it might host a cycle-path at some point in the future – their campaign HERE!

At present it is not open to visitors, but get behind the campaign and you may contribute to its grand opening one day!
