This awesome museum is on the site of the majestic Coalbrookdale Co.
The Coalbrookdale Co operated from 1709 right into the 1900’s.
They started when Abraham Darby I (the first) came on the scene and pioneered the use of coke in the furnaces instead of charcoal. This had commercial implications and he was initially able to cast cheaper houseware pots in his forges.
The company had a grand future though and went on to produce the famous Iron Bridge up the road; it was the perfect advertisement for their skills!
They also produced Richard Trevithick’s ingenious locomotion-inventions there and thus were part of the industrial revolution not only in terms of providing the raw materials but also for converting them into powerful machines.
They cast a wide range of useful items; ornate garden benches, agricultural machinery and heavy domestic stoves.
If you are in Britain and are vaguely interested in the industrial revolution, then you must visit this place!
