In the heart of the South Downs near Petworth, Coultershaw Heritage site includes a waterwheel, 18th century waterpump, 21st century water turbine and historic buildings set around the mill pond.

The Coultershaw Trust was formed in 2002 by the Petworth Society and the Sussex Industrial Archaeology Society. Their honorable objectives are:

 

‘to advance the education of the public by affording them access to the Beam Pump at Coultershaw, its surrounding environment as would have existed during its working life, and other items of historic interest’

At Coultershaw you can:

  • Watch the waterwheel drive the Beam Pump to produce an impressive water spout.
  • Learn how the Beam Pump was installed in 1782 to pump water to Petworth House and town, 1 ½ miles to the north.
  • See the Archimedes screw turbine using water to generate electricity.
  • Visit the Engine House, and try pumping water with the hand pumps.
  • Walk around the canal basin to see the remains of the 18th century lock, canal warehouses and stables.
  • Look out for the wide variety of wildlife and you may see fish climbing the fish ladder!
  • Explore the site using the FREE family nature trail.

 

Admission is unbelievably reasonable! Adults are only £2.50 and children are FREE!
