Donegal Railway Heritage Centre tells the story of the narrow gauge railway in Donegal.

The County Donegal Railway and the Londonderry & Lough Swilly Railway formed the largest narrow gauge railway system in north-west Europe.

Donegal Railway Heritage Centre was established in 1995 by the County Donegal Railway Restoration Limited. It’s situated in the old Donegal Town station. It also has the world’s largest digitised collection of photos of the Londonderry & Lough Swilly Railway and provides easy access to these for visitors via a clever touch screen device.

The County Donegal Railway and the Londonderry & Lough Swilly Railway had a total of 225 miles of track.

Other attractions onsite include restore (and unrestored) coaches, trailers and garden with picnic area. It appeals to locals and tourists alike with information on the history of the railway, model railway tracks, photographic displays, guides to the old routes and treasured railway memorabilia. The museum is really created for enthusiasts of all ages!

If you visit you will get to see the Newtoncunningham signal box! Rescued from the Londonderry & Lough Swilly Railway (L&LSR), Newtown Cunningham Station, in the late 1990s; it had stood on the platform since the closure of the station in 1953. It has been restored and the outside painted in Swilly Green. It is typical of the single storey signal boxes of the L&LSR.

There is also a railway-themed restaurant nearby!
