Like industrial giraffe, they grace the dockside in Bristol in the place where they earned their keep.

Built in 1951 by Stothert and Pitt, from nearby Bath, they were powered by modern electric and could lift 3 tons a piece.

There used to be eight of these beauties, but to have four remaining is still pretty good going.

There is a lot to see in this area, so plan to stay for the day and be sure to visit the M Shed and take a walk along the historic dockside to Brunel’s SS Great Britain.
