Geevor Tin Mine is one of the largest preserved mine sites in the UK!

This place, nay region, is an heroic survivor of the plight of Cornwall. Geevor was operational between 1911 and 1990, during which time it produced about 50,000 tons of black tin.

The workers, often whole families, struggled to keep pace with the demand of tin and various ores.

The tin, known as black tin, was won at great expense. Not just a way of life, but a necessity in these poor regions.

Roam around the site viewing the surface infrastructure and learn about the enormous network of human endeavour that lies beneath.

 

UNESCO WHS logoGeevor is also a designated ‘Key Centre’ for World Heritage Site interpretation, and its mining museum ‘Hard Rock’ enables visitors to explore copper and tin, and their extraction and uses.

 

 

 

You will need to spend a whole day here; it is extensive and totally absorbing. There is a delightful café which serves a fine pasty, so you can recuperate before you go off and explore the coast to the legendary Levant *sigh*.

    We enjoyed learning more about Cornish mining. This place evokes the recent past so well and the story of the miners here. The kids loved panning for metals and precious stones. The views must be stunning on a clear day and the Sunday roast at the cafe was very welcome! Worth booking when you arrive for this.
