Abraham Darby III’s iconic ironbridge on the River Severn, Shropshire.
Cast in 1779 and erected by 1781, it was the first cast-iron arch bridge in the World.
Its design incorporates many techniques that were utilised at the time in the construction of wooden structures and as a result is quite unusual!
It is probably Britain’s most famous monument to the birth of the industrial revolution, so a must see!
The whole area is a World Heritage Site, so beautifully preserved and visiting the region is like stepping into another world. If only the whole of Britain was treated with such care and respect!
The bridge was made possible due to several factors in the region, namely the deep River Severn, the wooded valleys, the varied mining and the prolific iron smelting.
