Formerly known as the Bristol Industrial Museum, the M Shed was the name given to the dockside building while it was in use.
The M Shed has industrial exhibits galore – inside and out!
It also opens its reserve archive on guided tours, called the L Shed!
The M Shed opened after major investment in the Summer of 2011 and it has gone from strength to strength. It goes without saying that Bristol is Engineering and the Cumberland Basin area certainly echoes that. The M Shed is based on Prince’s Wharf, just along from the mighty SS Great Britain in her dry dock.
Quite unbelievably, this incredible museum is ‘FREE’ to enter! Astonishing really! It has several themed galleries and some well-placed massive indoor exhibits!
Outside they have the four gorgeous electric cranes that look like mechanical giraffes – three of which work! It is also the home of the Mayflower, the oldest steam tug in existence and a dockside railway, the old Fairbairn Steam Crane and various other exhibits!
The L Shed tours are also not to be missed – you get a chance to wander around ‘behind-the-scenes’ and have a gooseygoo amongst the thousands of industrial and maritime artifacts. Check out the tour details HERE!
