There is a community campaign to maintain a route through Queensbury Tunnel to accommodate a possible future cycleway connecting Bradford and Halifax.

Queensbury Tunnel was built by the Great Northern Railway between 1874-1878, but is now derelict and presents a liability to its owner, the Highways Agency. Over the next few years they intend to carry out significant remedial works, which might result in the tunnel being blocked by plugs of concrete.

Queensbury Tunnel (2501yds) is one of the longest and deepest railway tunnels in England! It was on the G.N.R line serving the Northern industrial towns of Bradford, Halifax & Keighley. It was built in 1879 and passenger services ceased in 1955.

The line used to be known as the Alpine route due to its hilly nature!

Many would like to see access through the tunnel maintained so that it might host a cycle-path at some point in the future.

Actor Brian Blessed backs the campaign – see the story HERE!
