Ashburton railway station finally closed in 1971, it was the terminus of a branch line of the GWR from Totnes.
It sports a rare example of the Brunel-style Overall Roof, which is of an iconic and attractive design and spans the track and platforms. This unique terminus building was built before 1872 when the line from Totnes to Ashburton was opened. At some point it became a garage (Station Garage), which could be closed in the future and the building and the area around it redeveloped. It is not a listed building, but the assemblage of railway structures as a whole are of significant historical importance.

The station finally lost its track in 1971 (with the arrival of the A38) and now the Dartmoor National Park Authority (DNPA) and Teignbridge County Council are planning to lose more.
Their Masterplan for Ashburton has many commendable aspects – granted – and will be lovely when it is done I am sure. But many would like to see Ashburton Station back in action and development in direct opposition to this end makes the task more difficult (and expensive) – which is not good!
The clock is ticking on this one and re-consultation restarted in September! No end is currently in sight….but now is the time to have your opinions heard….what do they say? Speak now or forever hold your peace!
Friends of Ashburton Station need people-power and are openly asking for volunteers to get involved now!
You can participate by signing the petitions, following the Facebook Group and Page, share the info and maybe even Tweet about it too!
