Ballintoy harbour was important in the export of lime and sett stones to industrial cities such as Dublin, Cork, Wexford, Limerick and Glasgow.
Burnt lime from these kilns would have also been used in the construction of buildings throughout north Antrim.
This old limekiln has been refurbished with the aid of EEC grants.
Ballintoy Harbour (from Irish Baile an Tuaigh, meaning “the northern townland”) is a small fishing harbour in County Antrim. It’s located at the end of a very small, narrow, steep road down Knocksaughey hill. The area is so undamaged from modernity, that it accidentally attracted the film crew (and its entourage) of the controversial ‘Game of Thrones’ saga – but don’t hold that against it!
Complete with charging ramp and multiple features, this pair of robust beauties are here to stay!
Thankfully you can benefit from the beauty of the harbour and the historic ambiance by simply being there!
