Bocking Windmill is a rare grade I Post Mill.
It was built in 1721 at a location just down the road!
Bocking Windmill, although built earlier, was relocated circa 1830 to its new site opposite the pub. The mill and pub were both in the occupation of John Brown the Younger. At this time, the mill had one pair of French Burr stones and a flour dresser.
Although not a working windmill, much of the original machinery is still in place.
The post Mill is a 2 storey roundhouse. It has two Common sails and two Spring sails carried on a wooden Windshaft. Two pairs of millstones are located in the breast. The mill is winded by a tailpole. The mill is 43 feet (13 m) high to the roof.
It was worked until 1929 when it was presented to Bocking Parish Council by Mr Edward Tabor.
The mill has been adapted into a fascinating museum by the Friends of Bocking Mill.
