Verdant Jute Works is the last working jute mill in Britain and it’s now also a museum!

Verdant Works is so called because when it was built for David Lindsay in 1833 (a merchant and flax spinner) the area was surrounded by green fields. The Scouring Burn (river!) made it a perfect location for a mill.

In 1991, the Dundee Heritage Trust purchased the Verdant Works site and spent 6 years restoring all 25,000 square feet of it.

The AIA supplied a Restoration Grant in 2015 to reinstall the 1802 Boulton and Watt rotative beam engine. This makes it the oldest steam engine installed in a mill in the world!

Scotland’s Jute Museum @ Verdant Works, West Henderson’s Wynd, Dundee, DD1 5BT.
