Sculcoates Bridge over the River Hull is a road, swing bridge. It was built in 1874 and opened in 1875.
It was designed by J Fox Sharp and made by the Bridge & Roofing Co. Ltd., of Darlaston.
Sculcoates Bridge has riveted wrought-iron girders with arch tops, forming the span. It has wrought-iron guard rails to the wooden footways on either side. At the pivoted end (western end) it has a taper roller bearing with sectional cast-iron cage and counterweights in the form of short coped walls with capped rectangular pedestals, all with plinths and cornices. The pedestals have panels with a coats of arms and an inscription.
The free end has a pair of cast-iron support wheels!
The whole area is rather shabby chic and screams of days gone by…….what do you think?
Chapman Street, Kingston-Upon-Hull, Yorkshire
