Sumburgh Head Lighthouse, visitor centre and nature reserve is a world class visitor attraction.

The lighthouse was built by Robert Stevenson in 1821.

The Sumburgh Head Lighthouse is still in active duty and is maintained by the Northern Lighthouse Board. It is the oldest Stevenson lighthouse in Shetland and has been in continuous use since its construction in 1821.

The Sumburgh Head Fresnel lens has 26 reflectors, rather than the normal 21 of other standard lenses.

The Sumburgh Head Lighthouse can now proudly boast being a category A listed building, a café, marine life centre, lighthouse tower tours, engine room, viewing points, a RADAR hut, old smiddy (smithy),  an impressive foghorn and the smaller Muckle Roe light!

It provides an engaging and interactive experience for the whole family.

The bright red Sumburgh Head Foghorn is a striking landmark. It points out to sea and was built in 1905. It was last sounded in 1987, but will now sound again on special occasions. It takes around 25 psi to power the foghorn – the pressure being generated by the engines in the Engine Room. During the refurbishment project, the foghorn was returned to working order and is possibly the last working foghorn in Scotland!

Visit and explore the history and natural heritage of Sumburgh Head from early geological beginnings and Iron Age settlers to Lighthouse Keepers, Whales, Puffins and much more.
