Tapton Lock Visitor Centre is the only one on the Chesterfield Canal.

Chesterfield Canal is a barge canal in the north of England known locally as ‘Cuckoo Dyke’.

The Chesterfield Canal was opened in 1777, built to export coal, limestone, and lead from industrially delicious-Derbyshire, iron from Chesterfield, and corn, timber and, groceries into Derbyshire.

Tapton Lock Visitor Centre is located on the Chesterfield Canal to the north of Tapton Park. Incidentally, Tapton House was once the home of the incredible engineer George Stephenson!

Now you can enjoy the delights of the canal as a nature reserve and recreation space. The Tapton Lock Visitor Centre offers a range of facilities and activities. You can get a boat trip, walk or cycle along the canal.

The Bluebank Pools section of the canal is a local nature reserve and is one of the best places to look for wildlife.

The building and development of a canal network played a key, although short-lived role in the development of UK transport and industry. This network largely remains today providing green corridors valuable to both human and wildlife populations.
