Flimby Furnace is believed to have been constructed circa 1750.
It is seemingly an unlisted structure……..
Flimby Furnace was probably used by William Wood, who succeeded in achieving an unusually high temperature, effectively removing its lining.
It is a blast furnace and located by a stream, so presumably the bellows were operated by a waterwheel?
To find the furnace, you have to walk along the old mineral line. Now a public footpath, this old mineral railway was one of an extensive network, along with connecting tramways, that joined the many coal pits, brick works (such as Broughton Moor Fire Brick Works), quarries and chemical works in the area.
This gem is not an easy find: off the footpath and down a steep wooded and boggy slope.
