Elliot Colliery was opened in the late 1880s by the Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Company and the steam winding engine by Thornewill & Warham Ltd. remains on site as part of ‘The Winding House’ museum.

It is a horizontal twin-tandem compound steam engine, which worked until the site closed in 1967 and can be seen turning by electric motor during open days.
