In an area where much of the remains of the Hafodyrynys Colliery Drift Complex has long been swept away, beside the A472 between Ponypool and Crumlin you can still see the imposing round concrete structure that was once the Hafodyrynys Coal Washery.
The washery was built after an investment scheme began in 1954 and it once featured continuous glazed panels within its reinforced concrete frame.
The site closed in 1966.
